Last year was a great year for movies, especially for the superhero genre. 2017 was packed with some terrific films and some disappointing ones (I’m looking at you Justice League). 2018 boasts some great movies in it’s line-up. Here are the most anticipated movies for 2018 in order of release!
1) Blank Panther – February 2018
The Hype for Black Panther is real. Both trailers have been mind blowing, the cast is stellar, the action looks amazing and the soundtrack is being produced by none other than K.Dot Kendrick Lamar. Black Panther is helmed by the talented Ryan Coogler known for Fruitvale Station and Creed. Black Panther broke the record for the most tickets pre-ordered for a Marvel movie ever! Forget Infinity War, Black Panther may be one of the biggest Marvel movies yet and it’s just around the corner!
2) Ready Player One – March 2018
When Spielberg makes a movie you watch it, period. In 2018, Steven Spielberg makes his long awaited return to science-fiction with Ready Player One. Ready Player One is a sci-fi action-adventure flick based on the novel of the same name. Set in 2045, most of the world spends it’s time in a virtual reality program known as OASIS, when the owner of OASIS dies things go awry and a race to gain the control of OASIS begins. Spielberg’s last few movies have been more or less Oscar baity i.e The Post and Bridge of Spies but Ready Player One promises a return to the mega-blockbusters Speilberg is known for.
3) Avengers Infinity War – April 2018
I know the list is in order of release but honestly, this is my most anticipated movie of 2018! The culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ten years in the making. All the avengers we’ve seen so far and the guardians of the galaxy, go up against the big bad Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet. This movie is a milestone for the superhero genre and it’s in the hands of the Russo Brothers, the brains behind Captain America the Winter Solider and Civil War so we know that they are going to deliver! April cannot get here fast enough!
(Fun Fact: Before Marvel the Russo brothers directed episodes for Arrested Development!)
4) Solo: A Star Wars Story – May 2018
Let’s be honest, no one wanted a Han Solo movie. However, Disney fast tracked the project into production and now it’s only a few months away from release. This film has had serious trouble in development. Disney fired directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller halfway through shooting and replaced them with Ron Howard who reshot almost 40% of the film! Rumours have also surfaced that Disney were so unhappy with Alden Ehrenreich’s performance as Han Solo, that they hired an acting coach for him! The rest of the cast includes Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover and Woody Harrelson. Despite all these issues, the reason that this makes the list is because Star Wars fanboys like me need something to wash the taste of The Last Jedi out of their mouths.
5) Deadpool 2 – May 2018
The first Deadpool was one of the best origin stories ever put to screen. Ryan Reynolds was born to play the merc with a mouth and delivered a hilarious, bloody, action-packed R-rated film that was immensely successful. Deadpool overtook The Hangover for the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever (Until it was surpassed in 2017 by IT!) Deadpool 2 is out in a few short months and it boasts everything that made the first one such a hit as well as Josh Brolin as Cable! We haven’t seen much footage from Deadpool 2 yet, just a small teaser trailer of Deadpool imitating Bob Ross, however we can expect to see more footage soon!
6) Jurrasic World: Fallen Kingdom – June 2018
Jurrasic World was a decent movie, it captured some of the things that made the original a classic but it wasn’t perfect. I was particularly underwhelmed by the fact that they decided to reduce the Velociraptors, the most feared dinosaurs, into puppies that obey commands. Nonetheless I still had a fun time with Jurrassic World, and it went onto make an obscene amount of money at the box office.
Jurrasic World: Fallen Kingdom sees a return to the dinosaur island in order to save the Dinos from a volcanic eruption. It also marks the long awaited return of Jeff Goldblum’s character Dr Ian Malcom from the original. The more Goldblum the better in my opinion which is why this film makes the list!
7) Venom – October 2018
When Sony announced a solo Venom movie without spider-man separate from the MCU many fans, including myself were very sceptical. There is no way Venom could work without Spider-Man. However, Sony then announced that the movie would be gritty and R-Rated and starring none of other than bane himself Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom. Hardy is notoriously picky about his roles so the Venom script must be pretty darn good. Zombieland director will be at the helm and Riz Ahmed and Woody Harrelson have since been added to the cast. To make things even more interesting, now rumors have surfaced that Spiderman will indeed be involved and the film will be set in the MCU! No footage has been released for Venom yet however it will be interesting to see how this movie turns out!
8) Aquaman – November 2018
Justice League wasn’t terrible but it was a shambles at the box-office, barely making back it’s budget. The disappointment lead to a shake-up at Warner Bros. where they replaced key executives and appointed a new head of DC films. WB can’t take another loss like Justice League, however Aquaman has a lot of things going for it namely, James Wan. Wan is a seriously talented director. He is best known for his horror hits such as Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring, however he has some experience when it comes to blockbusters. Wan directed Furious 7 which is one of the highest grossing movies of all time! Trust Wan to deliver on Aquaman and put DC back on track.
9) Incredibles 2 – November 2018
The Incredibles came out wayy back in 2004 and it was, and still is, one of Pixar’s finest animated movies. Fans have been waiting years for the sequel and we’re finally getting it in 2018! Not much is known about the plot but the sequel picks up right where the last one ended, so the film may start off with a showdown with the villain The Underminer We might as well hand the Academy Award Best Animated Feature 2019 to Pixar in November!
10) Creed II – TBA 2018
Creed was my favourite movie of 2015, mind you that’s the same year The Force Awakens came out! Ryan Coogler crafted an excellent underdog tale that stands on it’s own in the Rocky franchise. Michael B Jordan was superb as Adonis Creed and Stallone flexed his acting chops as an aging Rocky Balboa. Stallone would go on to be nominated for an Academy Award and win the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, that’s how good he was.
Creed 2 pits the son of Ivan Drago from Rocky IV against Adonis in a sort of generational rematch between Rocky and Drago. No footage has been released yet but it still early days so expect something soon.
Indeed it is a great time to be a movie fan. 2018 is shaping up to be another great year for the movies. Did I leave out any anticipated movies in the list? If so mention them in the comments below!
