Some fans are confused by the difference between Thor’s major weapons, Mjolnir and Stormbreaker.
Due to the two-part saga having so much plot to get through, some fans are a little confused about the properties of each weapon. More specifically, who else is able to wield it.
Here’s a quick run down.
Note that we’re sticking to the movie versions of Mjolnir and Stormbreaker. The comics are a totally different ball game.
Also, spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.
The hammer Mjolnir, which was Thor’s first weapon, was destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok, leading him to replace it in Avengers: Infinity War with another powerful weapon, and axe called Stormbreaker.
During a trip to the past in Avengers: Endgame, Thor retrieves Mjolnir. This allows Thor to wield both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker during Endgame’s final battle.
Like many significant Asgardian weapons, Mjolnir was created by Eitri the dwarf on Nidavellir. While Thor can control thunder and lightning without it, the hammer helps him to focus and channel the power.
After banishing Thor from Asgard and stripping him of his power in the first Thor movie, Odin takes Mjolnir and places an enchantment upon it:
“Whomsoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.”
From this point onward, only the worthy can lift the hammer. Thor regains his own worthiness by the end of the film. In Age of Ultron, Vision gains the trust of the Avengers by lifting Mjolnir, and in Endgame, Steve Rogers officially joins the ranks of the worthy, wielding the hammer to save Thor from Thanos.
After Hela destroys Mjolnir in Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is left without a weapon when Thanos attacks Asgard’s ship in Infinity War’s opening scene. Accompanied by Guardians’ Rocket Raccoon and Groot, Thor ventures to Nidavellir to have Eitri forge him a new weapon.
This weapon is a mighty axe, Stormbreaker. Like Mjolnir, Stormbreaker allows Thor to fly and channel his lightning. The axe also comes with the added bonus of being able to summon the Bifrost, allowing Thor to travel between realms and over long distances quickly. Fans will remember this leading to his grand entrance during the battle of Wakanda, easily one of the most epic scenes of the film.
Stormbreaker does not have the same enchantment upon it that Odin placed on Mjolnir. Therefor, a person does not have to be worthy in order to lift it. Thanos using Stormbreaker does not make him worthy to lift Mjolnir. However, someone does have to be very strong in both body and mind to wield the axe safely. So while characters like Thanos and Captain America are seen using Stormbreaker, it is unlikely that just anyone could.
Steve Rogers returned Mjolnir to its rightful place in time during his final trip to the past, so we may not see it again anytime soon.
Stormbreaker was one of the few possessions Thor took with him when choosing to venture into space with the Guardians Of The Galaxy. If we’re lucky, we could get to see it in action in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3, which is rumoured to begin filming in 2020.
