SupaNova Pop Culture Expo is a fantasy film and TV, comic book, gaming and anime convention. And it features Cosplay. A lot of Cosplay.
It was our first trip to SupaNova, and we had the pleasure of some media passes to the event in Melbourne. Surprisingly, the event was bigger than Comic-con, with more in attendance, a lot more room to explore, and more things to see. It was a really well run gig, and we had a tonne of fun. You can see the adventures below.
There was a nerf fighting area, which we sabotaged for a little while and ultimately realised we were preventing the target market (5-12 years) from having fun. So, after that we did the right thing and left.
A Counter-strike gaming centre took stage behind the first exhibition building. So if you didn’t want to play at home you could jump on a machine there. Jules did get slightly addicted and we had to wrestle him from the machine there to do some video stuff. That guy has the attention span of a puppy.
Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) was there, and I attended her Q&A with an audience of thousands. Naturally I asked about her drinking exploits in the clubs back in Reading (UK), where we both grew up. I think she senses I was searching for a common interest to build on and promptly shut me down. Just like everyone else in my life. Kidding. Kinda.
By far the best thing about any event like this is the people, and this was repeated by almost everyone we interviewed. There’s a real sense of camaraderie, and even unicorns and horses get along (see below).
As you can imagine, the costumes varied greatly, and even our good friends from XLENT events were there. We got to go in the Batmobile, and it was great. As far as the actual cosplayers go, below is what we can remember seeing, but please add other in the comment section. Also, if anyone is interested in joining our ambassador club where we help promote cosplayers like yourselves, you can sign up here.
