Nightflyers has the potential to be fantastic.
Out of the mind of Game Of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin comes a new series titled Nightflyers.
Nightflyers is a horror story set space. Flashbacks of the Alien and Predators franchise. Me likey.
Martin describes it as a haunted house series set on a starship. So replace a haunted house with a spaceship, and voila.
That opens a whole new ball of wax that could make this series one of the greatest – or one of the worst. It all depends on how fresh those ideas are, as we have quite a few haunted house movies out, as well as dark sci-fis. To combine the two, the writers will have to conceptually use new ideas in their storylines.
The series is adapted from Martin’s 1980 novella and is set in the year 2093. Its five-year mission – Oh sorry, wrong series.
The crew of eight scientists aboard the Nightflyer hope to make contact with a mysterious alien ship parked at the edge of the galaxy.
That’s the plan, but as expected in best laid plans, things go horribly wrong, and people start dying.
The plot then changes from a scientific journey to one of plain survival.
The crew, once very tight knit and trusting, become fearful of each other. Self-preservation takes over, and the Alien spacecraft is totally forgotten.
Cast & Crew
The series stars Gretchen Mol of Rounders as Dr. Agatha Matheson, Eoin Macken of Resident Evil as Karl D’Branin, Maya Eshet of Teen Wolf as Lommie, Sam Strike of Leatherface as Thale, and Jodie Turner-Smith of The Last Ship as Melantha Jhirl.
Jeff Buhler of The Midnight Meat Train and Pet Sematary is the writer/creator for the series.
Nightflyers will debut sometime this fall, and I for one have high hopes for this series. Let’s hope it lives up to Martin’s Game of Thrones!
