The Ninth Doctor is back!
In 2005, Christopher Eccleston made history as the first actor to play The Doctor in the 2005 revival of Doctor Who. Though his performance as The Ninth Doctor was a hit with fans and critics alike, Eccleston only stayed with the show for a single season, the shortest tenure of any revival Doctor so far.
Due to rumoured tension behind the scenes, Eccleston has had a complicated relationship in the years since his departure. While the actor is happy to meet and discuss Doctor Who with fans, he has shown no interest in returning to the series.
Now, all that is about to change, with Eccleston reprising the role of The Ninth Doctor in a series of audio dramas for Big Finish Productions.
Here’s everything you need to know about Chritopher Eccleston’s return to Doctor Who.
Eccleston will be the eighth former Doctor to work with Big Finish
At this point in time, seven former Doctors have worked with Big Finish. These include all four surviving classic Doctors, Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor, the late John Hurt’s War Doctor, and finally Eccleston’s successor David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor.
This will make Eccleston the eighth former Doctor to work with Big Finish overall, and the third revival Doctor after Tennant and Hurt.
Big Finish’s audio dramas are deeply loved by the wider Whovian community, so to have Eccleston finally on board is exciting for fans. Some are hoping that the Big Finish stories will lead to Eccleston producing more Who content in the future, and history may just be on their side. Fourth Doctor Tom Baker was famously reluctant to return to Doctor Who, until his work with Big Finish helped him fall back in love with the role.
Christopher Eccleston is currently signed on to produce four volumes of Ninth Doctor Adventures
Each volume of ‘The Ninth Doctor Advenures will include three full cast audio dramas, adding up to twelve stories in total.
Volume One will be released in May 2021, followed by Volume Two in August, Three in November, and Four in February 2022. All four volumes are already available for pre-order on the Big Finish website, in CD, digital download, or collectable vinyl editions.
The fact that all four volumes have been confirmed at once suggests that The Ninth Doctor Adventures will be special releases. We probably shouldn’t get our hopes up for anything beyond Vol. 4.
The Cast is unknown.. But we can take an educated guess.
The full cast and plot of ‘The Ninth Doctor Adventures’ audio dramas have not yet been revealed. While the plot will remain a mystery until trailers or summaries are released, the cast may be slightly easier to guess.
Billie Piper has previously reprised the role of Rose Tyler for Vol.2 of Big Finish’s ‘Tenth Doctor Adventures’, and ‘Rose Tyler: Dimension Cannon’, and she’s never shied away from her place as a Doctor Who alumni. She’ll probably return again if asked. Camille Coduri, who plays Rose’s Mother, Jackie, is also a regular Big Finish contributor.
It’s worth noting that Big Finish may have no option but to use Rose. When the Doctor Who revival began, the BBC issued a decree that The Ninth Doctor could only be seen travelling with Rose Tyler. It’s unknown if this restriction has been lifted for the upcoming audios.
Whoever he travels with, it will be great to see, or at least hear, Christopher Eccleston as The Ninth Doctor once again. We can’t wait to see what Big Finish has in store for the first Last Time Lord.
