After much speculation over the future of the remaining original Avengers, we now have confirmation on a fourth Thor movie, titled Thor: Love And Thunder.
Official confirmation of Thor: Love and Thunder came among the many reveals during the Marvel panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-con.
This is big news, as Thor is now the first MCU hero to move beyond three solo films. That being said, we can expect a few big twists when the God of Thunder’s fourth adventure hits the big screen.
Here’s everything we know so far.
Taika Waititi will direct Love And Thunder
A few days before the SDCC panel, fans received news that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi was expected to take the reigns again for Thor 4.
Waititi’s return is a big win for Marvel, with his work widely credited with completely revitalizing the character of Thor. On a few occasions, star Chris Hemsworth implied that he might only return for another solo film if Waititi was directing.
Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will reprise the roles as Thor and Valkyrie
The return of both actors is another big win for Marvel, as Hemsworth and Thompson earned great praise for their chemistry in Ragnarok.
Thor and Valkyrie were both left in interesting positions at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame. Thor departed for new adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy, leaving Valkyrie as the Queen of New Asgard. It will be interesting to see where Love And Thunder takes them.
Valkyrie will officially become the MCU’s first LGBT Hero
In comics canon, Valkyrie has long been written as bisexual. Thompson kept this in mind for her portrayal in Ragnarok. A few moments in the finished film subtly hint at the character’s sexuality, with a deleted scene that would have confirmed it.
At the SDCC panel, Tessa Thompson revealed that Valkyrie will be a proud bisexual woman in Thor: Love And Thunder. Finding a special someone to rule New Asgard by her side will form a large part of her character’s arc in the film.
Natalie Portman will reprise her role as Jane Foster, only with a major twist.
After sitting out for Ragnarok, Natalie Portman, who played Jane Foster in the first two Thor films, returned to the MCU for a cameo appearance in Avengers: Endgame.
Portman will reprise her role again in Love And Thunder. However, it won’t be the same Jane Foster we already know. This time around, Jane will take up a hammer of her own as the first woman worthy of the power of Thor.
For a time, Jane enjoyed a popular run as Thor in the comics. During this period, she worked alongside original Thor, then going by the name Odinson.
Jane’s time as Thor comes to a heartbreaking end in the story ‘The Death Of The Mighty Thor’. Only time will tell whether the films choose to take the same tragic path.
Thor: Love And Thunder is currently set for release on November 5, 2021.
