The culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is upon us.

Avengers: Infinity War is shaping up to be the biggest, most ambitious superhero film ever made! Ever since Marvel arrived on the scene with Iron Man in 2008, they’ve been churning out blockbuster after blockbuster, but Avengers: Infinity War has the potential to be something truly special. Here’s everything you need to know about Infinity War ahead of its release!

Thanos will be front and centre

It’s no secret that Marvel has problems with its villains. Most of them have been unimpressive and forgettable, with a few standouts (Loki and Killmonger come to mind). Still, thats only two great villains out of 18 Marvel films. A key reason why Marvel’s villains fall short is that they get sidelined to give the heroes more development and screen time. Thus, when I watched Black Panther I was pleasantly surprised to see Killmonger feature so prominently. He is Marvel’s best villain yet.

Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War (the two best Marvel films in my opinion) have understood this and have put Thanos front and centre in Infinity War. In fact, in a recent interview they suggested that Thanos is the main character of the film! This is a great decision as Thanos has been built up so much. For him to live up to the hype he needs to be fully fleshed out with ample backstory and character motivation.

Infinity War is a “heist” film

The Russo brothers were inspired by 90s caper/heist films when writing Infinity War. These caper films featured ensemble casts, while focusing on a few characters attempting to steal the macguffin in the film. Not unlike Avengers: Infinity War, which features an ensemble of over 26 characters, but will focus on Thanos’ quest to attain all the Infinity Stones. (If you don’t know much about Infinity Stones check out this article!)

A big reason why Marvel has had so much success is that they are always changing genres within the larger superhero genre: Captain America The Winter Soldier was a political-thriller, Doctor Strange was a fantasy, Thor Ragnarok was a straight up comedy, and Infinity War will be a caper heist!

Infinity War is the biggest and longest Marvel film yet

The film clocks in at about 2 hours and 36 minutes ,making it the longest Marvel film yet, an accolade previously held by Captain America: Civil War which ran for approximately 2 hours and 28 minutes. Infinity War is a colossal event in the Marvel Comics Universe and even 2 and a half hours seems short!

I would’ve loved a 3+ hour epic but many would be turned off by such a long run time. Two and half hours hits the sweet spot in terms of length.

Furthermore, this will be the biggest Marvel movie when it comes to scale; every single Marvel hero (Including Hawkeye and Ant-Man) will play a part in Infinity War. Just by watching the trailer you can tell that the scale of this film is nothing like we’ve seen before.

I was disappointed when I watched Justice League as the stakes never felt high enough,  the world did not look like it was in danger. Fortunately, the folks at Marvel know how to show action on an epic scale!

Your favourite Avenger may not make it out alive

Marvel have played it close to the chest when it comes to killing off its heroes; the most notable deaths include Quicksilver and Yondu (and maybe Odin from Thor Ragnarok).

However this will certainly not be the case in Infinity War. I have a strong feeling that not one but a couple of Avengers will bite the dust. Most notably, Vision as he has one of the infinity stones, Hawkeye because he’s Hawkeye (sorry Hawkeye fans) and Iron Man.

Yes, Tony Stark himself might not make it out of this one and check out this article to find out why. Needless to say the stakes are high and so will be emotions when Infinity War rolls around.

Avengers: Infinity War is two part epic

The Russo brothers envisioned Infinity War as a two part epic, filming both parts back to back and releasing them a year apart. They may have dropped the subtitle Part 1 and 2, but make no mistake Infinity War is a two parter. Filming for the second part, an untitled Avengers film, has already begun and is slated to release in 2019.

This trend of splitting up movies into two parts began with the final Harry Potter film, however I did not mind it then and I don’t now. Just like the final Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Infinity War is a culmination of everything that’s come before it.

The comic storyline is way too vast to fit into one film and that’s why I love that Marvel are splitting it into two 2 and a half hour epics. I personally can’t wait till they both come out on blu-ray and I can watch both parts back to back, five hours or pure awesomeness!

Infinity War could become the highest-grossing film of all time!

These days superhero films tend to make A LOT of money, especially Marvel films. Avengers (2012) made over 1.5 billion dollars and is the fifth highest grossing film of all time! Marvel’s latest release Black Panther continues to crush it at the box office, recently crossing the 1.2 billion dollar mark, making it the 14th highest grossing film of all time. Currently, James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) holds the number one spot at around 2.5 billion dollars adjusted for inflation. That may be an ungodly number but if any film can beat it Avengers: Infinity War can.

Infinity War is the crown jewel for the Marvel Cinematic Universe; it has already broken records for the most pre-sale tickets for any film ever! There is no doubt Infinity War will break the 1.5 billion dollar mark the question is can it take Avatar’s spot and become the highest grossing film of all time? I think it’s a very strong possibility but there is only one way to find out.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theatres April 27th.
