After the familiar ‘Please Stand By’ slide was shared all over Fallout‘s social media pages, fans didn’t have to wait long for a reveal trailer for Fallout 76. But just what is Fallout 76?

Many fans had written off the anticipated announcement as either a remaster or launch of Fallout 3 on the Nintendo Switch. Some hardcore Fallout New Vegas fanboys even had their fingers crossed for a remaster of their favourite game in the series.

But only hours ago, the teaser – which mirrored that of the teasers for pretty much the entirety of the series – showed something new.

So what is Fallout 76?

No you haven’t missed Fallout 5 – 75. Fallout 76 is named after a vault our main protagonist will no doubt have presided in.

There are some cryptic clues in the trailer that elude to what may take place in the game. For example, a rather beat up leather bag and cap on the bed of Vault 76 would presumably mean that the vault has been opened previously. Another clue as to what is occurring is the poster on the wall where it mentions Vault 76, “the official Vault of the Tricentenial” with the dates 1776-2076.

It’s pretty safe to say that Fallout 76 will be a stand alone game.

What other hints can we gather from the Fallout 76 trailer?

It seems there has been a party celebrating “Reclamation Day”, the day the Vault Dwellers returned to the surface. Although there certainly doesn’t seem to be anyone around and nobody has cleaned up after the party. Not even Mr Handy. The only soul in the Vault is that of our hero.

A cabinet of bravery awards is proudly displayed. In conjunction with the dirty backpack, and the empty vault, maybe our hero has returned to their home vault to find it evacuated? No family or friends.

It is our hero’s journey to find out what happened to his vault’s inhabitants.

Of course this is all hearsay and assumptions. Fans will be having sleepless nights leading up to E3 where Bethesda’s Showcase promises more. Sunday, June 10th. Lock it in.

If you haven’t seen the trailer you can watch it here. In the meantime, why not go back and play through Fallout 4 using some of these mods!
