Marvel fans are hyped after a new Avengers: Endgame trailer dropped during the Superbowl.
The teaser, which has already been picked apart online, holds very little information that we weren’t previously aware of. No one really expected new details to be shown anyway, ever since the recent reveal that the film’s promotional material will only include footage from the first fifteen minutes.
However, it does hint toward a new friendship that has been teased since before Avengers: Infinity War was released.
Nebula’s Unlikely Friend
During the publicity tour for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2., Nebula’s actress, Karen Gillan, was asked about her character’s upcoming role in Infinity War. While Gillan was not allowed to reveal much, she did say that Nebula would end up with an unlikely friend among the Avengers.
This was a surprise, as Nebula had never shown much desire to have friends. Fans immediately began speculating as to who this unlikely friend could be.
Many came to the conclusion that it was the God of Mischief, Loki.
On the surface, the characters seem quite similar. Both have troubled relationships with their adoptive fathers. Both have struggled in the shadow of a more talented sibling. Both have followed a villainous path.
Both were on the road to redemption when Infinity War began.
Unfortunately, this theory was quickly debunked when Loki was killed in the movie’s opening minutes, hence never meeting Nebula. Nebula ends the film without having made any new friends at all, as she spends much of her screen time helping battle Thanos.
Iron Man and The Cyborg
So, what happened to the unlikely friendship Karen Gillan talked about?
Well, parts of Infinity War and Endgame were filmed concurrently. While the seeds of this friendship were sewn in Infinity War, the bulk of it will be seen in Endgame. And the identity of Nebula’s unlikely friend?
None other than Iron Man.
In Infinity War’s closing moments, Nebula and Tony Stark were left stranded together on Titan after their allies fell victim to the snap. Things do not seem to have improved for them much in Endgame, with the pair apparently now stranded in space after their ship runs out of fuel.
A brief snippet in the Superbowl teaser has Nebula and Tony working together to try and repair the ship. Forced into close quarters, Tony and Nebula may end up sharing their grief (Nebula for Gamora’s death, and Tony for the loss of Peter Parker), and bond over their mutual desire to avenge the deaths of their loved ones at Thanos’s hands.
We’ll see what other adventures this unlikely duo gets up to when Avengers: Endgame hits theatres in April.
