Yeah baby, yeah! Austin Powers could be making a funkedelic return to the silver screen with Austin Powers 4!
It’s been too long since the sexiest spy in history graced our cinemas – 15 years to be exact. Written by and starring Mike Myers as both the title character and Dr. Evil, Austin Powers was the ultimate spy movie spoof. Myers basically put on a 1960s outfit and some bad teeth and said, “Hey James Bond, you’re an idiot.”
Yet after the original trilogy was released in quick succession (International Man of Mystery in 1997, The Spy Who Shagged Me in 1999 and Austin Powers in Goldmember in 2002), the likelihood of a fourth movie felt increasingly unlikely.
New Austin Powers movie…
But don’t despair! Myers has told THR that he is still game for more movie madness.
“I would love to do another, but you just have to see. I was devastated by my father’s death. But to have that turn into something that makes people happy is unbelievably satisfying. It’s that kind of stuff you never get used to or get tired of.”
Myers attributes the character to his late father, who introduced him to comedy and the world of iconic British movie spies like James Bond.
Director Jay Roach seconds this Austin Powers 4 optimism:
“You know, [Mike Myers and I] talk about it every time we get together. I would say it’s in a latent phase right now, but someday if we find the right idea that seems to have it earn itself, for sure. Mike gave me the break of a lifetime in letting me direct [Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery] so I’m always good to go.”
Honestly if I get to see Fat Bastard on screen one more time I’ll legally change my name to Mini Me. I fucking swear. (Don’t quote me on this).
All of this being said, I do have to warn you not to get your hopes up (despite mine already being as up as the movie about the kid and the old dude and the balloon house).
In 2008, after he took a break from the Shrek films, Myers and some other creative dudes began working on a fourth film. Three years later, Myers agreed to begin Austin Powers 4, but the film never eventuated. Moment’s silence please.
I guess all we can do is hope. My bet is one day the Austin Powers 4 dream will materialise. And that will be the most shagadelic day in history.
