The Disaster Artist isn’t just a movie about a bad movie. It’s actually a whole lot more.
Oh hi Digital Fox fans! Do you think The Disaster Artist movie is just a piece of satire?
When Tommy Wiseau made The Room in 2003, he thought he was making a Tennessee Williams level drama. The greatest piece of cinema since Citizen Kane.
Well, he was kind of right… I mean, The Room is the Citizen Kane of bad movies. Tommy Wiseau’s The Room got all the attention one could ask for but for all the wrong reasons.
Not many movies can brag about having a cult following 15 years later and a movie made about it by James Franco. But The Disaster Artist isn’t just a movie about James Franco’s impersonation of Tommy Wiseau.
5 – James Franco’s new movie is based on the Disaster Artist book.
So all the shenanigans of The Disaster Artist movie aren’t just James Franco being weird, it’s actually based on The Disaster Artist book.
For those of you who don’t know the history, Greg Sestero (the guy who plays Mark in The Room), wrote a book in 2013 detailing his friendship with Tommy Wiseau and how they made The Room.
The Disaster Artist book is actually really interesting and The Room is just one part of it. It details how Greg met Tommy and the details of who Tommy is as a person. Greg wrote the Disaster Artist book because he says the story behind The Room is even weirder than The Room movie itself. Haha, that’s a funny story Mark!

4 – The Disaster Artist movie is not just a comedy…
What I loved about The Disaster Artist is that underneath all the weirdness, it’s a great Hollywood story. I know that sounds ridiculous but think about it.
Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero both meet in an acting class. Both guys are underdogs with little talent and no one believes in them so they become really close and support each other to achieve their dreams.
Both move to LA in pursuit of a dream and are continuously rejected for a long period of time. Tommy takes Greg under his wing and they make a pact to help each through thick and thin.
No one gives them a chance so they decide to make their own movie, the best movie EVER! And fifteen years later here we are still talking about them.
Tommy Wiseau is someone who has been rejected his entire life, with Greg being his only friend. Pretty sad really.
But in the end, both their dreams did come true. Although in a weirdly ironic way. Oh well, fate works in mysterious ways. I reckon that’s a pretty damn inspiring story.
3 – Tommy Wiseau actually has a cameo in The Disaster Artist movie…
When James Franco was buying Tommy Wiseau’s life rights for the film, Tommy said he would only allow it if he could have a cameo in The Disaster Artist movie opposite James Franco. Haha, that’s a funny story Tommy!
This makes absolutely no sense since James Franco is playing Tommy Wiseau. So basically Tommy Wiseau has a cameo opposite James Franco who is also Tommy Wiseau. Great, just what the world needs: two Tommy Wiseaus talking to each other.
Haha classic Tommy!
Although be patient because Tommy Wiseau’s cameo appears at the very end of the film, after all the credits, so most would have missed it. It’s a very weird ending to a very weird movie.
Overall, it works pretty well I think. Click here to learn more about Tommy Wiseau’s cameo in The Disaster Artist film.
2 – James Franco stayed in character to direct The Disaster Artist…
If you know anything about James Franco then this might not be surprising to you. Franco is a pretty eccentric dude and if you think about the reasons behind it, then it makes a lot of sense.
Tommy Wiseau was both the star and director of The Room (as well as producer, writer, biggest fan, etc…). So since James Franco is playing Tommy Wiseau and is directing the film, he also needs to stay in character while directing so he can play the character.
So basically James Franco is playing a guy who acts and directs his own movie while James Franco also acts and directs his own movie inside the movie…
Wow, this is getting too weird for me. It’s so meta, so many levels to this thing. But what else would you expect from two of the weirdest guys in Hollywood?
1 – Tommy Wiseau approves of The Disaster Artist movie 99.9 percent…
You would think that if a movie exists to completely make fun of you, then you would be kind of pissed off. Well, not Tommy Wiseau. In fact, he loved almost everything about the film.
I reckon this is because he still thinks The Room is the greatest movie of all time and that The Disaster Artist movie exists to praise his genius. Kind of like a documentary into the mind of Freud or Einstein. Boy is he wrong…
He definitely didn’t get the memo. Someone really needs to tell Tommy Wiseau that his film sucks and that’s why we love The Room. YOU’RE TEARING ME APART LISA!
Also Tommy Wiseau has famously stated that he only approves of about 40 percent of The Disaster Artist book. Well, the movie is based on the book so…
Oh well, nothing makes sense with Tommy Wiseau. We just have to accept that.
So what was the 0.1 percent that Tommy disapproved of? It was something about the lighting I think…
So there you have it. A comprehensive breakdown of The Disaster Artist movie. It’s actually a whole lot more complex than you might have realised so hopefully this gives you a deeper appreciation of the genius that is Tommy Wiseau. Bahahahah! But seriously..
