With the release of Deadpool 2 creeping ever closer, here are five things you need to know first.
The first Deadpool movie was such a massive success – can the Deadpool sequel match expectations?
Well before you find out, here are some important facts about Deadpool 2 that will get you both excited and informed.
1 – Deadpool 2 release date…
So first thing’s first: we need to remind you all that Deadpool 2 is coming soon… very soon.
In fact, the release date for Australia is the 16th of May, while America will have to wait a couple more days for a May 18th release date.
2 – Here’s what you should know about Deadpool 2‘s villain, Cable.
Well this is no surprise since the Deadpool post credit scene made it pretty clear.
While Deadpool did say they had no idea who they’d cast as the villain, we now know that Josh Brolin will play Cable aka Nathan Summers.
Cable will be the second epic villain Josh Brolin has bought to life in the MCU. The first one was Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.
So just a bit about Cable. He’s the son of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor and was sent to the future to become seasoned for battle to one day return to the present and stop the apocalyptic future from happening. Pretty epic right? So there’s obviously a lot of storyline to unravel in the Deadpool sequel.
And who doesn’t love some good old family drama to spice things up a bit.
Cable has some impressive powers…
Facing Cable will be no easy feat for Deadpool. Cable’s long list of powers include telepathy, telekinesis, psionic shields, psionic blasts, astral projection, matter alteration, size alteration, for fields, concussive blasts, flight, teleportation, time travel, healing factor and enhanced physical abilities such as speed and strength etc.
That’s quite the resume. I reckon Deadpool will have his hands full and might need some help to bring Cable down. It’s a good thing Deadpool can’t die.
So with Cable being so complex, how will the Deadpool sequel handle this character? Screenwriter Paul Wernick gave some insight in an interview with Collider.com:
“So with Cable, he’s got such a convoluted past, and such a convoluted origin story that I think we’re going to try to leave that, not mysterious, but there are a lot of twists and turns, cloning and all this stuff where you go, ‘Oh my God. How do we get that across in a two-hour movie?’ I think we’re going to distill him down to his essence. It will be authentic and faithful, but it’s not going to include the 18,000 details if you were going to read a Wikipedia page about Cable you’d roll your eyes.”
3 – Domino will be an important character in Deadpool 2.
The fact that the first Deadpool movie didn’t have many strong female characters was disappointing to say the least. Deadpool’s girlfriend only served as the love interest, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Angel dust were really flat characters.
Even though the last two were badass, they seemed more like pawns to contrast and highlight the male characters and provide novelty.
So let’s hope that Domino will be a more well-rounded badass femme fatal.
Domino is a mercenary and a mutant with probability-altering powers, high level marksmanship and can throw down with the best of them. She has also been connected with Cable in the marvel comics storyline. The two share a pretty strong bond.
Domino will be played by Zazie Beetz who is best known for her role as Venessa on the series Atlanta.
4 – Deadpool 2 will have a new Director.
It seems that the director for the first Deadpool movie, Tim Miller, will not reprise his role for Deadpool 2. Initially he was meant to sign on for the Deadpool sequel, but creative differences between him and Ryan Reynolds got in the way.
So the new director of Deadpool 2 will now be David Leitch who is best known for directing John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves.
Apparently David Leitch beat directors such as Drew Goddard and Magnus Martens for the Deadpool sequel.
If you’re feeling unsure about the change of directors, that’s understandable, but Deadpool 2 is in good hands. David Leitch is a pro when it comes to directing action and he can tell a complicated yet self-contained story.
He also knows how to balance character building with hard hitting action and he is the just the right guy to build up this Deadpool cinematic universe. All of this has been proven with how he handled John Wick, so I reckon we will not be disappointed.
5 – Deadpool 2 will continue to jab at the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What makes Deadpool such a loveable character is that he never takes himself too seriously, understanding that he is just a fictional character. This trend is set to continue in the Deadpool sequel.
Deadpool producer Simon Kinberg has stated in an interview with SlashFilm that the sequel will continue to poke fun at superhero sequels, just like itself.
“I think Deadpool 2 will comment on anything that’s happening in movies today especially in superhero movies… the sort of glut or saturation of these movies and the proliferation of sequels is definitely something we’ll play around with.”
Deadpool has already made fun of Thanos by spoofing the letter Thanos wrote about no spoilers with regards to Avengers: Infinity War. Shots been fired!
Other references include DC and the X-Men…
Anyway, so there you have it. A comprehensive breakdown of five things you should know before watching Deadpool 2. Let’s hope it’s everything we hope it’ll be. Oh, and don’t forget, NO SPOILERS!
