With the 2018 Venom movie set for release later this year, here are five things we think you should know.
Now that Marvel have a solid hit with Tom Holland as the new Spiderman, work can begin on expanding the small Spiderman Universe with Venom 2018. However, the web slinger is pretty tied up (no pun intended) with other film projects.
To keep things interesting, Sony has decided to expand the Spiderman Universe to include Tom Hardy as Venom. About bloody time, I say! Venom definitely deserves its own solo film with a proper back story.
This will add some complexity to the rather small Spiderman Cinematic Universe. It’ll also allow for some pretty exciting solo movies and ensembles to follow after the Avengers faze winds down.
I reckon in the near future, the Spiderman: Homecoming sequels will dominate the MCU. This new addition of Venom will add a whole lot of exciting material to the Spiderman sequels.
But let’s first outline five things you need to know about the new Venom movie:
1 – Marvel’s Venom Cast and Venom 2018 Release Date.Venom has a big tongue. Source: Geek Culture
The new Venom movie is set for release on the 5th October 2018
While the cast isn’t as star studded as Avengers: Infinity War, it’s still pretty great.
Tom Hardy stars as Eddie Brock, the symbioses host. To be honest, he doesn’t seem anything like Eddie Brock from the comics but I don’t think that really matters for this film. I love Tom Hardy and I reckon he’ll maker a great Venom!
Manchester By the Sea actress Michelle Williams will also stars as Anne Weying aka ‘She Venom.’ She’s the ex-wife of Eddie Brock and will play a crucial role in the movie.
You can expect to see Woody Harrelson as well. While nothing has been set in stone just yet, rumour has it that he might play a well known Spiderman Villain… Check number three on my list to get the bigger picture.
There’s another star rumoured to be in the new Venom movie, which brings me to point number two!
2 – Tom Holland is rumoured to feature as Spiderman in Marvel’s Venom 2018 movie.Tom Holland may feature in Venom as Spiderman. Source: Geeky Reporter
Nothing has been confirmed just yet. Sony wants to stay quiet on a couple of big casting announcements until closer to the release date. But no Venom solo movie would be complete without an appearance from Spiderman.
Tom Holland’s been pretty busy though, so hopefully he can make time in his schedule. Upcoming films featuring Tom Holland’s Spiderman include Avengers: Infinity War and a Spiderman: Homecoming sequel.
The way I see this going is Spiderman and Venom start off as enemies and perhaps come to a truce towards the end of the film after saving Anne Weying. At least that’s how the comics are written, but MCU is renowned for putting their own twist to things.
Nobody’s sure if the 2018 Venom movie will follow the original storyline, but apparently that is the case. I hope not to be honest. I don’t want to see Venom become a good guy so quickly, there is much quarrelling to be done! That is, unless the two team up against Carnage. Boy would that be epic!
Which brings me to point number three…
3 – Woody Harrelson is rumoured to portray Carnage in the new Venom movie.
Now settle down children, this has yet to be confirmed. But it makes sense.
Who better to portray a deranged serial killer than Woody Harrelson? If you have any doubts, then perhaps you should watch Natural Born Killers. As far as I’m concerned Woody Harrelson is the only man capable of playing Carnage!
But maybe the casting of Woody Harrelson as Carnage hints at a more complex depiction of Cletus Kassidy. Maybe Marvel wants to delve deeper into his character. Despite Woody’s knack for crazy characters, he also brings a soft spoken warmth to them as well. Zombieland immediately comes to mind. Woody has the ability to do a lot more than just crazy. Although, he does do crazy very well.
Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see how Marvel and Woody Harrelson decide to depict Carnage.
4 – The new Venom trailer reveals what Venom will look like, plus a lot more…
Until now, there has been such little marketing for the new Venom film that it was getting annoying. Plus the first Venom trailer didn’t reveal much of anything about the movie. But the second trailer tells us a lot more.
Ok let’s first start with the most crucial element. Ladies and gentlemen, we finally know what Tom hardy’s Venom looks like! But meh, I wasn’t that impressed (please don’t hate me!).
On one hand, it was great to see the Symbiote portrayed in all its glory, but it kind of looked a bit plasticky. I thought the black substance was unnaturally shiny and kind of looked like a toy (although a very cool one at that).
Also, why is the new Venom trailer 2 being marketing like a sci-fi thriller? I mean, that’s kind of what it is, but it seemed a bit corny and melodramatic to me. But I did like the portrayal of Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. He seemed very dark and brooding. Just a really sad, tragic guy who is about to cause some serious shit to go down. This is why I love Tom Hardy.
Venom’s voice also seemed way too try hard scary. It was like some guy was speaking through one of those microphones that changes your voice (that’s probably what it was to be honest). I’ve always really liked the higher pitched voice of Venom portrayed in the Spectacular Spiderman cartoon (check it out here). But maybe that’s just my nostalgia talking.
And I’ve left the most important part till last. Did you hear the way that the word ‘Symbiote’ was pronounced? How messed up is that? It’s not pronounced Sim-bye-oat, it’s Sim-bee-ot.
But other than all those things I just mentioned, I’m totally psyched. The new Venom trailer 2 should provide some much needed hype.
Which brings us to…
5 – The Venom storyline is going to resemble the Comics.Planet of the Symbiote. Source: Reddit
Director, Rueben Fleischer has stated that the narrative will follow that of the 1993’s ‘Venom: Lethal Protector’ limited series and 1995’s The Planet of the Symbiotes storyline. If you’re a comic-book nerd, than that should probably mean something to you.
Also to answer my previous questions about whether Spiderman and Venom will form a truce, it is looking likely.
The movie will delve into the backstory of Eddie Brock and portray him as an anti-hero. My guess, as stated above, is that Spiderman and Eddie Brock will team up to save his ex-wife, Anne Weying and then will have to work together to take down Carnage.
It is looking likely that the Venom movie will move past just the typical Venom and Spiderman vendetta and will actually come full circle as friends again. I like this evolution to Venom only if they take down Carnage together, otherwise it’s a bit cheesy. But it’s definitely a step forward from the standard evil Venom we’re used to seeing.
So there you have it, 5 things you should know about the upcoming Venom movie. Hopefully it’ll be as good as it should be!
