Below are 4 Aussie actors to watch in 2018 who didn’t get their start as Australian TV actors.
It’s no secret that Australian TV actors punch well above their weight in Hollywood. In fact, some of your favourite movies have Australian TV actors in starring roles. This trend will definitely continue for 2018 but many Aussies are skipping the whole Australian TV actor thing to jump the line straight into Hollywood.
Up until recently, the only way to get to Hollywood from down under was to start off as an Australian TV actor and then move oversees after your mandatory few years on Neighbours or Home and Away.
After all, that’s how Chris Hemsworth did it, Margot Robbie, I etc. They all started out as Australian TV actors. But things are different now…
Australian actress Angourie Rice has big things lined up in 2018.
At only sixteen years young, Angourie Rice is doing pretty well for herself. Last year in 2016 she got her big break in the Hollywood film The Nice Guys, a dark crime comedy. She stared alongside Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.
This year she really hit the jack-pot playing Betty in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Not bad for a high school girl who lives in Melbourne.
Angourie Rice is an example of an actor who skipped the whole Australian TV actor thing and just went straight for the big time.
Sure, she made a few Australian TV guest appearances but she carved out her career overseas. She’s made a name for herself in Hollywood films rather than as an Australian TV actor on Neighbours or Home and Away.
Angourie Rice is someone you will be seeing a lot more of as an Australian actor in 2018, and coming years. As of now, she will be staring in an Australian comedy/drama called Ladies in Black which looks really exciting.
Nickolas Hamilton is on the rise as a young gun Australian Actor.
At only seventeen years of age, Nickolas Hamilton has already stared in some massive films. In fact, when I tell you what he’s been in, you might be shocked that you don’t recognise his name yet.
His first feature film was the Aussie drama, Strangerland. It’s a really intense film that showed the then fifteen year old’s talent for dramatic roles.
The following year he followed up with a role in the drama/comedy film Captain Fantastic, along side Viggo Mortensen.
2017 was a huge year for Nick, being the only Australian actor in It. He plays the psychotic, mullet wearing bully Henry Bowers. Other than Pennywise the Clown, I reckon the bully was the most interesting character in the whole film.
Not to mention he stars in the action/fantasy Dark Tower. Not many actors can say they’ve stared in two massive films from Stephen King’s novels in the same year.
Nick is such a talented young kid and while he doesn’t have anything booked yet for 2018, he definitely will soon. Nick is another example of a young star who skipped the whole Australian TV actor thing to go straight to Hollywood. I guess if you’re THAT good, why not?
Kodi Smit-Mcphee is an Australian actor that will star in a Marvel film in 2018…
Despite only being 21 years of age, Kodi has been acting in Hollywood films for around 10 years. He already has starred in 2 massive franchises and he’s done so without starting off as an Australian TV actor.
You might recognise him as Alexander from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and as Kurt Wagner from X-Men: Apocalypse.
Although despite his success, he’s gone under the radar throughout his career, even in Australia. But i reckon it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a house hold name.
2018 is set to be a huge year for Kody as he is reprising his role as the loveable blue smurf like mutant Kurt Wagner in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Also set for 2018 is the film Alpha which is an epic film about surviving the Ice Age.
Kathrine Langford is best known as the lead in 13 Reason’s Why.
I had to give 21 year old Kathrine Langford the number one spot because she basically came from obscurity to then jump straight into the lead role for one of the most controversially talked about Netflix Series in 2017.
Before that, her only credits were a couple of independent short films. If you check her imdb credits, you won’t find anything as an Australian TV actor on Neighbours or Home and Away, not even a guest appearance.
Regardless of the controversy surrounding the Netflix Series 13 Reason’s Why, you can’t deny that Kathrine is a really talented young Australian actor who has a bright future ahead.
Because of the success of the series, a lot of film opportunities have lined up for Kathrine. In 2018 she will be starring in the romantic drama Love, Simon.
