Reboots and revivals are the trends throughout the entertainment world. It is no surprise then that we have a new series bringing back our favourite Karate Kid and his nemesis Cobra Kai.
Revivals such as Will and Grace (NBC), Roseanne (ABC), and Fuller House (Netflix) are hitting the airwaves. They join the generation gap under one roof. Now, YouTube Red is getting in on the revival trend by way of a sequel to the Karate Kid. In the new series, Cobra Kai, we will learn about Johnny Lawrence, his past and the reasoning for reopening the Cobra Kai dojo.
In the beginning: Karate Kid
In 1984 we learned the meaning of “Wax on, right hand. Wax off, left hand. Wax on, wax off,” from Mr. Miyagi, a maintenance man at an apartment complex in the film, The Karate Kid.
Mr. Miyagi, played by the legendary Pat Morita (1932-2005), sees a tenant running from a gang of bullies. He intervenes, defending the teenager.
When Daniel LaRusso, played by the never ageing Ralph Macchio, sees there is more to the maintenance man then fixing things, he asks him to teach him karate. Mr. Miyagi refuses, until he sees the Cobra Kai dojo, where the bullies train. What Mr. Miyagi sees there changes his mind and he trains Daniel.
Johnny Lawrence, played by William Zabka, one of Cobra Kai’s best students and one of Daniel’s bullies, faces off with Daniel at a tournament. He loses to him and disappoints the Cobra Kai’s dojo and his Sensei, John Kreese.
Present day: Cobra Kai
Now, 34 years later, the down-and-out Johnny Lawrence reopens the Cobra Kai dojo. He is teaching the new generation of students the same code. “We do not train to be merciful here. Mercy is for the weak,” he tells his students in the new teaser trailer from YouTube Red.
Johnny reinforces the school’s motto: “Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy.” He takes a special interested in Miguel, played by Xolo Maridueña, a victim of high school bullies. The reopening of Cobra Kai dojo reignites the feud between Johnny and Daniel.
More is at stake; Daniel has a family. He lives a comfortable life in Encino. He runs a string of car dealerships with his wife Amanda, played by Courtney Henggeler. They have a son, Anthony, played by Griffin Santopietro, and a daughter, Samantha, played by Mary Mouser. How will the rivalry affect the family?
Daniel is not the only who has a family. Johnny has a son, Robby Keen, played by Tanner Buchanan, who wants to be nothing like his father. Will Daniel teach him the ways of Mr. Miyagi?
Reason for series
The new action comedy YouTube Red series is 10 episodes, half-hour each. The Karate Kid reboot is created by John Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald. With co-executive producers Ralph Macchio and William Zabka.
“Like everyone who grew up in the 1980s, the three of us are enormous fans of The Karate Kid. Cobra Kai will be a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry, and we’re thankful to our partners at YouTube Red, Sony Pictures Television and Overbrook for their shared enthusiasm in making our dream project a reality.” Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg said in a statement via The Hollywood Reporter.
Per Hollywood Reporter, the idea behind the sequel to Karate Kid is to raise the demographics for YouTube Red’s viewing audience from 18-34 to 18-49. Cobra Kai will bring those who fell in love with the Karate Kid movies to visit their beloved Daniel once again. Along with a new generation of viewers.
Are you excited about this Karate Kid reboot? And speaking of reboots, have you heard about the Charmed reboot? We’re not happy.
