The Sniper Ghost Warrior games have previously been very rigid in design. Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 is different.

CI Games, the developers for the Sniper Ghost Warrior series, have changed their tune dramatically from the narrow corridors and stifling gameplay where you pick one target off after another.

Now you have an open world in Georgia, controlled by separatists that you must overcome. The scale of the game has been drastically increased and the options open to you have been expanded upon. This is a great move by CI Games.

Georgia is a barren world, and the inhabitants are pretty uninteresting. It becomes quickly apparent that engaging with the locals isn’t needed and that you can acquire the funds and materials needed to gain the weapons and ammo that you might want. It’s pretty dull.

Well, Ghost Sniper Warrior 3 is dull at least until you reach the active mission.

You can ignore some of the smaller objectives such as completing the mission without raising any alerts or picking up a drone etc etc. The game really picks up when you’re back into the habit of simply being an elite sniper.

The first thing you should usually do is fire up the drone and send it into the sky to understand your environment, tag your enemies and spot the best points to get into the ideal sniping position. This is fun and adds a sense of realism and flexibility to the missions.

The trials and trepidations of what must be the very difficult job of a sniper are clear to the gamer, where once you’ve got into prone position you twist the dial on your scope, adjust for wind, bullet drop and a moving target and then shoot. The bullet flies through the air (obviously) and nails, or misses its target, depending on how good you are.

Missions take around 30 mins, but you can be quicker and the name of the game is being silent and patient. The kill-shots as always are strangely satisfying, which is very weird and worrying.

If the game had focussed more on that element, whilst adding in the planning and extra tools available to you such as the drone, then it might have been a better experience. The other aspects of the game felt like they had been minor add-ons, which is frustrating.

Mildy addictive, but lacklustre. Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 gets a 6/10 from us.
