The Doctor Who series 11 Teaser Trailer has just been released. But where is The TARDIS?

After a long wait, fans have finally been treated to a teaser trailer for Series 11 of Doctor Who.

The long-awaited series will make history with the introduction of Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, the first ever female incarnation of the character.

The new teaser introduces fans to new companions Ryan, Yasmin, and Graham, and offers a glimpse of the Thirteenth Doctor.

However, one icon of the long running sci-fi series is noticeably missing. The Doctor’s Police Box shaped Time Machine has long been at the core of the action in Doctor Who, and usually features heavily in marketing.

So, where is the TARDIS?

A quick recap

To answer this question, we need to take a look back at where Doctor Who left off in Series 10.

When she regenerated from her twelfth incarnation into her Thirteenth, The Doctor was faced with a crashing TARDIS. This is a common occurrence for newly regenerated Doctors, so she did not immediately panic.

Unfortunately, The Tardis then cast her out and de-materialised, leaving the new Doctor plummeting towards her doom.

This left the audience with two questions: Where is The Tardis? And why did it throw The Doctor out?

It is interesting to note that the TARDIS has not been hugely prominent in any of the Thirteenth Doctor’s marketing, aside from the video introducing Jodie Whittaker.

The photo introducing the new Doctor’s outfit has the TARDIS in the background. In a promotional poster for series 11, the TARDIS is far off in the distance.

Now, in the teaser, there is no sign of the TARDIS at all. There are definitely still time travel shenanigans of some sort going on. Accompanied by a mysterious silvery effect, Yasmin opens her previously empty Pizza box to reveal a new whole Pizza, and Graham is stealthily given a comic from 1981.

But no TARDIS.

All this seems to confirm that The Doctor will not have the TARDIS with her when Series 11 begins. This also lends evidence to an increasingly popular fan theory about upcoming episodes.

Quest for The TARDIS

Some fans suspect that the Thirteenth Doctor will find herself stranded on Earth, at least temporarily.

A quest for the TARDIS would tie-in wonderfully with the ‘full season story arc’ route the show is said to be taking. It makes things fresh and interesting. Without the TARDIS, The Doctor may have more work to do in bonding with her companions. She cannot just zap them through time to make them believe her.

The TARDIS may have cast The Doctor out because it did not recognise her in her female form. Every new Doctor has to prove themselves to the fans. The Thirteenth Doctor may just have to prove herself to The TARDIS as well.

Where is The TARDIS?

We don’t know. We’re sure to find out sometime after Series 11 of Doctor Who begins airing in October. But we could be going the long way ’round.
