Here At Digital Fox we know our games, and we know our movies, so Assassin’s Creed as a movie should appeal to us. But,  to cut a long story short, it doesn’t.

Games rarely make good movies. I don’t think Assassin’s Creed will be any different.

I’m trying to wrack my brain right now for a really good one, and it’s either not quite in gear right now or there truly hasn’t been a great one. Dear God, Doom is the only movie that comes to mind and that was awful. Wait wasn’t there a final fantasy movie that wasn’t half bad?

The thing Assassin’s Creed has going for it, that could make a difference, is an engaging plot and that it genuinely has a storyline that shouldn’t have been touched too often, I mean, how many times do you travel into the past through your family genetics? It will be interesting to see the audience reaction. How they are going to explain the bloody animus to anyone in the introduction time for a movie is beyond me although this trailer gives us a clue.

They also have a decent actor in Michael Fassbender of X-Men fame amongst others. He’s British as well (like me), so that just makes everything better. My main concerns actually come from that book turn film trilogy that didn’t make it past the first movie. My beloved “His Dark Materials” trilogy by Philip Pullman was turned into a film trilogy which promptly got shut down because it tore into the Christian (and others) belief systems and was frankly too controversial for air… apparently. Shame, because they were great books.

So how the hell has a video game series which focusses so much more on religion got the green light?

And how much outrage will there be this time? In the 10 years or so since Golden Compass I think the world has become more open minded, but whether it will accept what’s to come from Assassins Creed is up for debate. And having played the game I can tell you that it could stir up some interesting topics.

So, two massive concerns in that games don’t work as films, and controversial religious plots don’t get received well. I would love this one to prove me wrong, and the fact that a second has already been signed off bodes well. Personally I expect this film to fall off a cliff or a very large building much like the main character should do often in the movie.

We will see.
