With superheros predicted to drop left, right, and centre, in Avengers: Infinity War, who will be the new Marvel characters to pick up their mantles?
With Avengers: Infinity War set to come out April 25th 2018 (Aus), there haven’t been all that many leaks in regards to plot. But while we know as much as Jon Snow, fans have been investigating every small detail coming off the set of Infinity War to try and extrapolate some spoilers. And as of now, we know at least four things.
First of all, an Asgardian Statue spotted on the set of Infinity War, was identified as being part of the dream/vision sequence Thor (Chris Hemsworth) had in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
While there isn’t much to reveal on the surface, if you just remember back to that disappointing sequel, you’ll see Heimdall (Idris Elba) unravelling to Thor that they were all dead. So if they’re dead, then one could guess that they were found in Hel, a Norse underworld of sorts. So if the statue is only found in Hel, then we may see some fan favourites killed. That’s Hela scary am I right? And no, I am not apologising for that pun.
I personally think that rather than seeing fan favourites die, we’re going to see a sort of prison-break scene. But with the prison being Hel of course.
According to ScreenRant, actors who have been in the vicinity of this statue, and ergo Hel, include Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie) and a stand-in for Guardian of the Galaxy’s Rocket.
While it is likely that Hulk and Valkyrie could potentially have been killed in Thor: Ragnarok, the presence of Rocket Raccoon alone has me believing that the master engineer and escapee of 22 prisons, would be trying to break people out. So that could be to try and break out the Hulk and Valkyrie, or using them both to try and break out some others. And let’s be real, how cool would that be!?
Another thing we know is that according to the Protector of the Nine Realms, Ruler of the Baxter Building, President of Marvel Studios and friend to all nerds and geeks out there, Kevin Feige, has confirmed that Infinity War will be “more exciting than people are aware of right now” and that the title of the second part of Infinity War will be a major spoiler.
Last of all, we know that if the film is going to be loosely based off the comics, we’re going to see a lot of fan favourites die.
In any case. Hype. Is. Real. And with great hype, comes great rumours.
Is it going to be Tony?
One such rumour going around is that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) will be one of potentially many who will get booted off to Hel, never to feast in the glorious halls of Valhalla! RIP.
And it’s not entirely ludicrous that this could be the case. Thus far, Downey Jr. has been involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Iron Man’s release in 2008. So, by the time Infinity War comes out, he’ll have been around for a bit over ten years.
And let’s be real, dat boy gets paid. According to Variety, Downey Jr. earned $50 million for The Avengers, $75 million for Iron Man 3 and $40 million for Civil War.
And while Marvel movies sure make a lot of money, it can’t be cheap to continuously forfeit a substantial amount of the profits to one actor alone. Well, I guess it is Robert Downey Jr. so that’s alright, right?
He’s also in his early 50s, so the question of how long he can keep up the physique and character of Tony Stark comes into play.
But no matter what happens, if Infinity War is going to have some glorious deaths, then I can imagine there being no better way to give Robert Downey Jr. the send-off he bloody deserves. If it weren’t for him, if it weren’t for the success which was Iron Man, I doubt the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have been as successful as it was.
So Kevo, if you’re reading this, I trust you, but do the man some justice!
Well, who’s going to replace Iron Man?
If Iron Man were going to get the chop, then obviously someone would need to replace him. The mantle of Iron Man surpasses any one person alone, and means different things for different people. For Tony, it represents redemption and responsibility. For the rest of the Iron Man, it literally represents nearly all of their global problems. Seriously, how often has Tony been the source of all the Avengers problems? But he’s also a philanthropist who genuinely wants to see good done in the world.
The obvious successor to Iron Man of course is Lt. Col. James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), otherwise known as War Machine. He knows how to work the Iron Man armour, the Avengers already know him, he’s not on the run because he signed the Sokovia Accords in Civil War – he’s perfect!Don Cheadle looking like a boss. Or! We could go with Riri Williams?
Who is Riri Williams?
Well I am glad you asked. Riri Williams is currently found in the comics playing the superhero ‘Ironheart’ – the successor to Iron Man (SPOILERS IN THIS LAST LINE IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE COMICS BUT IF YOU DON’T MIND READ ON) following his death in Civil War II.
Riri is a teenager who at the age of five was certified as a super-genius. So smart, she started to attend MIT at the age of 15, and ended up building her own Iron Man Armour out of her garage.
Later spotted by Tony Stark, recognising her genius and intellect, Tony took Riri under his wing, shaping her into the superhero – Ironheart – that fans are loving today.Riri next to her own Ironheart Armour. Source: Wallpaper Abyss artist Whitewolf7597
Why I bring Riri up is the fact that there have been rumours going around that she may indeed appear in Phase 4, past the events of Infinity War. Now I personally don’t imagine it being too difficult to introduce Riri into the MCU. Hell, Riri could be introduced in a…. well I don’t know, an up and coming Marvel movie, starring a high-school protagonist who’s picked up and mentored by Iron Man?
But seriously, I really hope that Riri at least gets a mention in Spiderman: Homecoming because it’d be the perfect setting to introduce her character, and link her to Iron Man.
